Do Kids Really Need Sunscreen? The Best Sun Care for Little Ones!

When the sun is shining and your little adventurers are ready to explore, sunscreen might not be the first thing on their minds—but it should definitely be on yours! Whether they’re building sandcastles, running in the park, or just tagging along for errands, kids need proper sun protection just as much (if not more!) than adults.

Why Do Kids Need Sunscreen?

Kids’ skin is delicate and more prone to sun damage. In fact, research shows that getting just a few sunburns in childhood can increase the risk of skin issues later in life. Plus, children’s skin absorbs more of what we put on it, making it even more important to choose the right sunscreen.

Can Kids Use Adult Sunscreen?

Technically, yes. But should they? Not necessarily. Many adult sunscreens contain chemicals and fragrances that might be too harsh for kids’ sensitive skin. Instead, look for sunscreens that are specifically formulated for children—gentle, fragrance-free, and ideally with mineral-based ingredients.

Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: Which is Better for Kids?

There are two main types of sunscreen: chemical and mineral. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Chemical Sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They often contain ingredients like oxybenzone or avobenzone, which can sometimes cause irritation or allergies in young kids.
  • Mineral Sunscreens (also called physical sunscreens) create a protective barrier on the skin that reflects UV rays. These usually contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, both of which are super gentle and safe for children. If you’re shopping for sunscreen, mineral-based formulas are usually the best choice for little ones.

The Importance of SPF 30 for Kids

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a key part of sun safety. An SPF 30 sunscreen blocks about 97% of UVB rays, which cause sunburn. Anything lower might not provide enough protection, while anything higher (like SPF 50 or 60) only increases protection slightly. SPF 30 is the sweet spot—strong enough to keep kids safe without unnecessary chemicals.
